The story

MEO Mares in Matosinhos

MEO Mares is a large summer pop, rock, and hip-hop festival held at Praia do Aterro in Matosinhos, drawing around one hundred thousand attendees over three days. It is the continuation, under a new name and beach location, of MEO Mares Vivas, which ran in Vila Nova de Gaia from 1999 until a dispute with that municipality prompted its relocation.

For nearly two decades, the festival known as MEO Mares Vivas was a fixture of summer in Vila Nova de Gaia, staged along the Douro riverside since its founding in 1999 by promoter Jorge Lopes.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes MEO Mares from a typical new festival is precisely that it is not new: it descends directly from MEO Mares Vivas, founded in 1999 by Jorge Lopes in Vila Nova de Gaia, which built a nearly two-decade history hosting acts such as Robbie Williams, Scorpions, Mika, Hozier, and Placebo along the Douro riverside

02

The mystery stays covered

After a dispute with the Gaia council over the event's future site, organizers moved the festival to the beachfront Praia do Aterro in Matosinhos and dropped 'Vivas' from the branding

03

The city starts moving

The 2026 edition drew roughly one hundred thousand attendees over three days, and a 2027 return to Matosinhos was announced immediately afterward, suggesting the relocation is intended to be permanent rather than temporary
