The story

SonicBlast Fest in Moledo/Vila Praia de Ancora

SonicBlast Fest is a boutique beach festival specializing in stoner rock, doom metal, and psychedelic rock, held annually since 2011 in Caminha county, northern Portugal. It relocated from Centro Cultural de Moledo to Praia da Duna dos Caldeiroes in Vila Praia de Ancora around 2022, and caps attendance at roughly 10,000 to keep an intimate scale.

Caminha county, tucked into Portugal's northernmost coastal corner near the border with Spain, is not an obvious setting for an internationally known heavy-rock festival, which is part of what has made SonicBlast Fest distinctive since its 2011 debut as SonicBlast Moledo.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike Portugal's larger commercial pop festivals, SonicBlast built its identity around a specific, niche heavy-music scene, stoner rock, doom metal, and psychedelic rock, drawing bands and fans from across Europe and beyond to a small stretch of northern Portuguese coastline

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 2025 edition, the thirteenth since the festival's 2011 founding, featured Earthless performing their album Sonic Prayer in full alongside Fu Manchu, Circle Jerks, Monolord, and more than thirty bands total

03

The city starts moving

The festival deliberately caps attendance at around 10,000, a fraction of the crowds at Portugal's mainstream summer festivals, preserving a boutique, community feel around a specialized genre
