Columbus Festival Madeira in Porto Santo
Festival Colombo devotes four days each autumn to Vila Baleira on Porto Santo, recreating the sixteenth-century arrival of Christopher Columbus, who lived on the island after marrying the daughter of its captain. Actors, a period market and a re-enacted quayside disembarkation bring the Age of Discoveries back to the island's streets.
Porto Santo is a small, sun-bleached island roughly two hours by ferry from Madeira, best known today for a single nine-kilometre beach that draws day-trippers and golfers.
