The story

Porto Saint John Festival in Porto

Porto's Saint John festival, São João do Porto, transforms the city on the night of June twenty-third into twenty-fourth with fireworks over the Douro, street parties and the citywide ritual of tapping strangers on the head with small plastic hammers. Leeks, basil pots and paper hot-air balloons round out a set of customs unique among Portugal's midsummer saint festivals.

Every city in Portugal seems to claim its own version of the June saints' festivals, but Porto's São João has built an identity distinct enough from Lisbon's Santo António that the two are rarely confused by anyone who has experienced both.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

São João do Porto stands apart from Lisbon's Santo António through its own distinct set of props and rituals, most famously the martelinho, a squeaky plastic hammer used to tap people lightly on the head, a tradition invented in 1963 by a Rio Tinto factory owner and now inseparable from the festival

02

The mystery stays covered

Older customs persist alongside it, including alho-porro, a leek once used the same way the hammer is now, and small pots of basil, manjericos, exchanged as festival gifts

03

The city starts moving

The night culminates in a mass fireworks display over the Douro river, followed by a traditional walk from the city center out to the Foz, where the river meets the Atlantic, a pilgrimage many Portuenses make every single year regardless of the hour
