The story

MEO Monte Verde in Ribeira Grande

MEO Monte Verde is the flagship summer music festival of Sao Miguel Island in the Azores, held each August at Praia do Monte Verde in Ribeira Grande since roughly 2013, combining concerts with sports activities and drawing around 40,000 attendees in recent editions under telecoms sponsor MEO, which joined the event in 2020.

Sao Miguel, the largest and most populous island in the Azores, has built its reputation on volcanic lakes and hot springs more than on music festivals, but Praia do Monte Verde in Ribeira Grande has spent more than a decade proving the island can also host one of Portugal's biggest summer events.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

As one of the largest festivals in the Azores, MEO Monte Verde pairs its music program with outdoor sports activities and an explicit focus on sustainability, technology, and social inclusion, distinguishing it from purely music-focused festivals elsewhere in the archipelago

02

The mystery stays covered

Originally supported by the Ribeira Grande municipal council from its first edition around 2013, it gained telecoms company MEO as title sponsor in 2020

03

The city starts moving

Its 2025 edition reportedly drew more than 40,000 festivalgoers, generating mobile data traffic equivalent to more than thirteen years of phone calls, a striking measure of the crowd density on a relatively small island
