The story

Festival de las Flores de Aibonito in Aibonito

Since its first edition in 1969, Aibonito's Festival de las Flores has turned the mountain town's floriculture industry into a ten-day showcase held each June on grounds just outside the town center. Growers and retailers from across Puerto Rico display and sell flowers of every kind, alongside fruit and vegetable exhibits, live music, and children's activities.

Aibonito sits higher and cooler than most of Puerto Rico, a mountain town whose climate has long made it hospitable to flowers that struggle in the island's tropical lowland heat.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

At more than five decades old, the festival is one of the longest-running agricultural festivals in Puerto Rico and reflects Aibonito's long-standing identity as a center of the island's floral industry, a reputation that predates the festival itself

02

The mystery stays covered

Its scale, a full ten days rather than a single weekend, is unusual among Puerto Rican town festivals, most of which run for two or three days

03

The city starts moving

The event survived a forced hiatus after Hurricane María devastated the local flower industry in 2017 and further cancellations during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring how tightly the festival's fortunes are tied to the health of the town's actual flower farms
