Festival de la Danza Puertorriquena in Ponce
The Fiesta Nacional de la Danza, also called Semana de la Danza Puertorriquena, is a week-long celebration in Ponce each May honoring danza, the ballroom musical genre often called Puerto Rico's classical music. Centered on Plaza Las Delicias and the Teatro La Perla, the event has roots in nineteenth-century Ponce and is sponsored jointly by the municipal government and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture.
Ponce, on Puerto Rico's southern coast, has spent more than a century treating a piece of ballroom music as a marker of civic identity.
