Founded in the early 2010s as a competitive event inviting mapping artists from multiple countries, it stages its main projections over several nights, usually in early autumn.
Video mapping, the technique of projecting animated imagery precisely onto a building's three-dimensional surface so that architectural features appear to move, transform, or dissolve, became a global festival format through the 2000s and 2010s as projection technology grew powerful and affordable enough to illuminate entire facades rather than small screens.
