The story

Sambra Oilor in Huta Certeze

The National Sambra Oilor Festival is the largest festival in the Tara Oasului region, held each May on a hillside at Huta-Certeze in Satu Mare county. It revives the old shepherd custom of sambra oilor, the annual separating, counting, and milk-measuring of sheep before flocks head to mountain pastures.

In Tara Oasului, a distinct cultural region in Satu Mare county near Romania's northern border, spring has long been marked by a working shepherding practice called sambra oilor: the point in the calendar when shepherds gathered their flocks, separated and counted the sheep, and measured the milk each animal produced before driving the flocks up to mountain pastures for the summer.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is built directly on a working pastoral practice rather than a purely symbolic reenactment: sambra oilor historically marked the point each spring when shepherds separated and counted their sheep and measured milk yield before driving flocks up to summer mountain pastures, and the festival preserves that practice, known locally as Ruptul Sterpelor, as its ceremonial core

02

The mystery stays covered

It draws together a wide coalition of local government, from the Negresti-Oas town hall and Certeze commune hall to the Satu Mare county council and the county prefect's office, alongside the Satu Mare center for traditional culture, reflecting its status as the region's flagship cultural event

03

The city starts moving

The resident Oasul folk ensemble hosts the celebration, which combines the pastoral ritual with music and dance performed in traditional Oas folk dress
