The story

Oradea Medieval Festival in Oradea

The Oradea Medieval Festival is a July weekend held inside Cetatea Oradea, one of Romania's largest medieval-themed events, bringing together historical battle reenactors and full-contact jousting tournaments with armor exhibitions, working craftsmen, falconry, fire-juggling shows, medieval music and a fortress-wide program aimed at families of all ages.

Cetatea Oradea, a star-shaped Renaissance fortress that took shape from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, spent much of the twentieth century closed off and in disrepair before a long restoration returned its bastions and courtyards to public use.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's setting inside an actual pentagonal Renaissance-era fortress gives its reenactments unusual authenticity: hundreds of fighters from multiple countries stage full-contact jousting and hand-to-hand battle tournaments in the fortress ditch, while the interior courtyard hosts nightly concerts

02

The mystery stays covered

Beyond combat, the program includes armor displays, fire-juggling shows, working craftsmen and artisans, medieval games, a dedicated Medieval Tavern serving period-style food, and birds of prey demonstrations, giving it a breadth that goes well beyond a simple battle re-enactment show

03

The city starts moving

Its scale, drawing fighters and craftspeople from across Europe into a single fortress, makes it one of the largest events of its kind in Romania
