Khakassia Tun Payram in Askiz/Abakan
Tun Payram is the Khakas people's traditional festival marking the start of summer and the season's first milking, celebrated in Khakassia's Askiz district and near the capital Abakan. Rooted in pastoral and Tengrist ritual practice, it combines horse racing, national wrestling, archery, throat singing and chatkhan music with kumis tasting and traditional dress.
The Khakas are a Turkic-speaking people indigenous to the upper Yenisei river basin in southern Siberia, with a pastoral economy historically built around horses, cattle and sheep herding across the steppe and forest-steppe landscape of what is now the Republic of Khakassia.
