Breath of the Steppe Festival in Belyaevsky District
In the dry grasslands of Orenburg's steppe reserve, this open-air festival turns a working conservation site into a day of walking trails, folk crafts and produce stalls. Held on the grounds of the Center for the Reintroduction of Przewalski's Horse, it draws thousands of regional visitors each summer for guided ecological routes, quizzes about the reserve, and a market of local food and handicrafts. Admission is free.
Out past the last scattered farmsteads of the Belyaevsky district, where the Orenburg steppe rolls flat and gold toward the Kazakhstan border, there is a patch of protected grassland that has quietly become one of the more unusual conservation stories in Russia.
