Great Bolgar Medieval Battle in Bolgar
Great Bolgar is an annual medieval combat reenactment festival held since 2014 at the Bolgar historical settlement, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Tatarstan, recreating the fighting styles, dress, and material culture of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the height of the medieval Volga Bulgar and Golden Horde period.
Bolgar was, for several centuries before the rise of Kazan, the leading city of the Volga Bulgars, a Turkic state that controlled trade along the middle Volga and eventually became a key political and commercial center of the Golden Horde after the Mongol conquests of the thirteenth century.
