Dzheyrakh Skyrunning Festival in Dzheyrakh
Each April, the mountains of Ingushetia's Dzheyrakh district host a skyrunning festival that draws well over a hundred competitors from across Russia for a vertical kilometer race and a longer mountain trail. Courses wind past medieval defensive towers, including the fifteenth-to-seventeenth-century Erzi complex, and climb Mount Stolovaya, a peak regarded as a symbol of the republic, with views toward Mount Kazbek.
Ingushetia is one of Russia's smallest republics and one of its most dramatically vertical, a landscape of narrow gorges and stone defensive towers built by Ingush clans centuries ago to withstand raids and hold ground in terrain where flat land is scarce.
