Dzhangariada Kalmyk Cultural and Sports Festival in Elista
Elista, capital of Kalmykia, hosts Dzhangariada, a national holiday named for Dzhangar, the legendary warrior at the center of the Kalmyk oral epic of the same name. The festival gathers epic storytellers, or dzhangarchi, alongside wrestling, archery, and equestrian competitions, including races on the region's distinctive Kalmyk camels, with yurt cafes serving open-fire cuisine throughout the grounds.
Kalmykia is a genuine anomaly on the map of European Russia: a Buddhist republic on the steppe, home to descendants of Oirat Mongol migrants who brought camel herding and a distinct epic literary tradition to the lower Volga centuries ago.
