The story

Kalmykia Tulip Festival in Elista/Steppe reserves

The Kalmykia Tulip Festival is an annual folk-ethnographic celebration of wild tulip blooming in the Kalmyk steppe, first held in April 1996 under the name Hymn to the Tulip and formalized as a festival in 2013. Organized by Kalmykia's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, it combines conservation education for the protected Schrenck's tulip with a Kalmyk ethnographic camp of camels, sheep and native horses.

Kalmykia, a Buddhist-majority republic in Russia's southern steppe region, is home to wild populations of Schrenck's tulip, a protected species that blankets sections of the Kalmyk steppe in a brief, brilliant bloom each spring.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival was created explicitly as a conservation strategy: by the twenty-first century Kalmykia's wild tulip population had shrunk sharply as tulip steppe was ploughed under or grazed, and because tulips take three to seven years to grow from seed to flower, selective picking of the largest blooms had caused the surviving population to grow smaller over generations

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than relying on enforcement, organizers, including photographer and ecologist Valery Moseykin, built a festival that draws large crowds specifically to teach visitors and locals not to pick the flowers, and by its third edition organizers reported that participants had largely stopped picking tulips altogether, with the festival winning Russia's national Russian Open Event Expo award in 2019 for best ecological event
