The story

Illusion Street Theatre Festival in Gubkin

Each year, with one gap in 2024, the Belgorod Oblast city of Gubkin hands its Lesoplyazh park over to touring street-theater troupes for a day of open-air performance. Companies have traveled in from Moscow, St Petersburg, Sevastopol, Voronezh, and Almetyevsk to join local Gubkin performers, part of a program funded by mining company Metalloinvest's community investment arm.

Gubkin is an iron-ore mining town in Belgorod Oblast, built up around one of the richest magnetic anomaly deposits in the world, and its cultural calendar has historically leaned toward what a mining economy usually funds: sports facilities, technical schools, the practical infrastructure of a company town.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Street theater remains a relatively niche form in Russian regional cultural programming, and Illusion is built specifically around its variety — the program is designed to show the aesthetic and genre range of contemporary street performance rather than a single style

02

The mystery stays covered

Its opening act, a workshop-style lab run by the Kartonia Street Theater, invites audience members to build and operate their own cardboard puppets before the day's performances begin, blurring the line between spectator and participant from the outset

03

The city starts moving

The festival's funding through Metalloinvest's Vmeste (Together) social investment program ties it to two sister festivals in Stary Oskol and Zheleznogorsk, forming a small regional festival season that together draws more than ten thousand viewers
