Kaliningrad World Ocean Day Festival in Kaliningrad
Kaliningrad marks World Ocean Day each June with a waterfront festival centered on the Museum of the World Ocean, whose historic research vessels and submarine line the embankment. The event combines free ship tours, marine science talks, ecological outreach and family activities celebrating the Baltic Sea and Russia's oceanographic heritage.
Kaliningrad's relationship with the sea is unusual even by Russian standards: cut off from the rest of the country by Lithuania and Poland, the city survives on its Baltic coastline and fishing fleet in a way few other regional capitals do.
