Kazan International Opera Festival named after Fyodor Shalyapin in Kazan
The Shalyapin International Opera Festival has run in Kazan since 1982, making it the oldest continuously held opera festival on former Soviet territory. Staged each February at the Tatar Academic State Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Musa Jalil, it honors Kazan-born bass Fyodor Shalyapin with productions of Russian and international opera repertoire performed by leading soloists from Russia and abroad.
Kazan's opera house has been staging a festival in February, Fyodor Shalyapin's birth month, since 1982, which makes it, by most accounts, the oldest continuously running opera festival anywhere in the former Soviet Union.
