Kazan Sabantuy in Kazan
Kazan Sabantuy is the culminating, largest celebration of the Tatar folk holiday Sabantuy, held in the Tatarstan capital each June after weeks of village and district-level festivities across the republic. It centers on kuresh belt wrestling, horse races, folk dance and games, and is timed to the end of spring fieldwork rather than its historic start.
Sabantuy is the principal national holiday of the Volga Tatars, and its roots reach back to the pre-Islamic agricultural calendar of the Volga region, shared historically among Tatars, Chuvash and Bashkirs.
