The story

Jazz Province Kursk in Kursk

Since 1996, Kursk has launched an unusual touring jazz festival called Jazz Province, which under artistic director Leonid Vintsevich moves through cities across Russia's European heartland rather than staying in one place. Each edition pairs celebrated international musicians with rising talent from Russia and abroad, with stops that have included Bryansk, Voronezh, Tambov, Lipetsk, Belgorod and Oryol.

Most jazz festivals ask audiences to travel to them.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes Jazz Province from almost every other jazz festival in Russia is its format: rather than concentrating performances in one city, it deliberately tours across the European part of the country, giving audiences in smaller regional cities access to musicians they would otherwise only hear about secondhand

02

The mystery stays covered

Under Leonid Vintsevich's direction since 1996, the festival has built a lineup history spanning musicians from Australia, Bulgaria, Brazil, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Cuba, Poland, the United States, France and Japan among many others, an unusually international roster for an event rooted in provincial Russian cities

03

The city starts moving

Pairing recognized international masters with younger, less established musicians on the same bill gives emerging performers real exposure alongside veterans, and for regional audiences it means a world-class program arrives close to home
