Khoomei in the Center of Asia Festival in Kyzyl
Every other August, Kyzyl, the capital of the Republic of Tyva, becomes a gathering point for Khoomei in the Center of Asia, a biennial international festival built around the Tuvan technique of producing multiple vocal pitches at once. Grown from an earlier symposium into a full international festival by 2015, it drew enough recognition to be named among Russia's top events of 2018.
Khoomei in the Center of Asia matters because it turns local identity into public practice, giving history, skill and belonging a form people can gather around.
