Kalmykia Lotus Festival in Lagan
The Lotus Festival celebrates Kalmykia's wild pink lotus fields, held each summer across the Caspian town of Lagan and the nearby village of Dzhalykovo. Free to attend, the festival is structured around the five classical elements, water, earth, air, fire and metal, with each festival day dedicated to one, alongside eco-expeditions, horseback ethno-tours, craft workshops and tastings of traditional Kalmyk food.
It is easy to forget that lotus flowers grow wild in Europe at all, yet along the Caspian lowlands around Lagan, in the Kalmyk Republic, entire fields turn pink each summer as lotus blooms spread across shallow wetlands.
