Samara Grushinsky Festival in Mastryukovo Lakes

The Grushinsky Festival is Russia's oldest and largest author-song (bard music) gathering, held since 1968 near Samara at the Mastryukovo Lakes. Fans camp in tents across the surrounding meadows for days to hear performers play from a floating stage built in the unmistakable shape of a guitar.

Author song, known in Russian as bardovskaya pesnya, emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as an informal, largely acoustic genre carried by students, geologists, mountaineers and other groups whose work or lifestyle involved long stretches away from cities, often around campfires where guitar and voice were the only available instruments.
