Murmansk Festival of the North in Murmansk

The Festival of the North is a winter sports festival founded on March 30, 1934, sometimes called the Polar Olympiad. What began with 86 skiers from five cities grew into an internationally attended multi-discipline event with reindeer-sled racing, ice hockey and its own Olympic-style flame lit annually in Murmansk since 1984.

In March 1934, 86 skiers from five cities, Murmansk, Leningrad, Moscow, Petrozavodsk and Vologda, gathered above the Arctic Circle to compete in what would become the Festival of the North.
