Sabantuy Naberezhnye Chelny in Naberezhnye Chelny
Sabantuy is the Volga-Ural region's traditional post-sowing festival, and Naberezhnye Chelny, a major industrial city on the Kama River in Tatarstan and home to the KAMAZ truck plant, holds one of the republic's large civic celebrations, bringing Tatar wrestling, horse racing, and folk performance to a modern industrial city with deep rural roots.
Naberezhnye Chelny did not exist in anything like its current form until the Soviet Union chose it, in the 1970s, as the site for the KAMAZ heavy-truck plant, one of the largest industrial construction projects of the late Soviet period, which pulled in workers from villages and towns across Tatarstan and beyond to build both the factory and a new planned city around it.
