Novosibirsk's Festival of Science is the local edition of Russia's nationwide science-festival network, centered on Akademgorodok, the city's dedicated science district built around Novosibirsk State University and institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Akademgorodok was built in the late 1950s as a purpose-designed science town on the edge of Novosibirsk, part of a Soviet strategy to relocate serious scientific research away from Moscow and Leningrad and into Siberia, where new institutes could be built from scratch around a new university rather than inherited into existing city infrastructure.
