Autumn Fountain Festival Peterhof in Peterhof
The Autumn Fountain Festival marks the seasonal close of Peterhof's famous fountains, staged each September on the Grand Cascade in front of the Baltic Sea-facing palace outside Saint Petersburg. A themed sound-and-light show, timed to the fountains' final days of operation before winter, draws crowds to the Lower Park for a program that has recently centered on Peterhof's wartime destruction and postwar restoration.
Peterhof's fountains are, by design, a feat of engineering rather than mechanics: no pumps drive the water skyward, only gravity acting on reservoirs fed by natural springs several kilometers inland and channeled downhill toward the Gulf of Finland.
