The opening of the fountains at Peterhof marks the start of the summer season at the Peterhof State Museum-Reserve, the eighteenth-century imperial residence west of Saint Petersburg built for Peter the Great. Held each spring, the ceremony restarts the palace's famous cascade and fountain system with a costumed, music-and-fireworks program on the Grand Cascade facing the Gulf of Finland.

Peter the Great built Peterhof, originally a modest waypoint on the road to the naval fortress of Kronstadt, into an imperial residence explicitly meant to rival Versailles, and its central engineering achievement, the Grand Cascade and the more than one hundred fifty fountains that follow it through the Lower Park, remains one of the more genuinely remarkable pieces of eighteenth-century hydraulic engineering anywhere in Europe.
