Kamchatka Beringia Sled Dog Race Festival in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
Beringia is a sled dog race of varying length across Kamchatka Krai and Chukotka, first held in 1990 to preserve local dog-sledding traditions and the Kamchatka sled dog breed. Its 1992 edition, run over 2,044 kilometers from Esso to Markova, set a Guinness World Record for the longest dog sled race, and Beringia has been an official Kamchatka holiday since 2010.
Beringia began in April 1990 as an effort to preserve local sled dog traditions, including the Kamchatka sled dog breed itself, at a time when dogsledding's role in the region's traditional economy was under pressure.
