Karelia Hyperborea Festival in Petrozavodsk
Hyperborea is Petrozavodsk's international winter festival of snow and ice sculpture, growing out of an International Competition of Snow and Ice Sculptures that has run in Karelia's capital since 1998. Named for the mythical northern land of Hyperborea from Greek legend, it has become one of Petrozavodsk's most recognizable winter cultural brands.
Petrozavodsk, the capital of the Republic of Karelia in Russia's northwest, has hosted an International Competition of Snow and Ice Sculptures since 1998, a winter tradition that turned the city's public squares into open-air galleries of large-scale ice and snow artwork each year.
