The story

International Street Theatre Festival Yelagin Park in Saint Petersburg

The International Street Theatre Festival is an outdoor performance event that for a decade transformed Yelagin Island's central park into a stage for touring street theatre companies from across Europe and beyond. Every corner of the island hosted simultaneous performances, from large-scale spectacles to intimate pantomime, blurring the line between audience and performance for three days each summer.

For ten years, Yelagin Island, the northernmost of the three islands that make up Saint Petersburg's Central Park of Culture and Leisure, became something unusual for three days each summer: an entire outdoor stage with no fixed seating and no single show.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

At its peak the festival drew more than 50 companies from countries including Belgium, Poland, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Estonia, Belarus and South Korea, turning Yelagin Island into an international showcase for a performance style built around public space rather than a conventional stage

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than confining acts to a single venue, organizers scattered performances across the park's paths, lawns and waterfront, so visitors moved through the island discovering different acts, sometimes overlapping, in a format designed to erase the usual boundary between spectators and the show itself
