The story

Opera for All St Petersburg in Saint Petersburg

Opera for All is Saint Petersburg's largest open-air opera series, staging full productions for free each July at some of the city's most recognizable historic sites, from the Peter and Paul Fortress to the palace squares of Gatchina and Tsarskoye Selo. Founded by conductor Fabio Mastrandrea, it has run for roughly fifteen years as one of the city's most established outdoor cultural traditions.

For roughly fifteen years, one of the most reliable fixtures of a Saint Petersburg summer has been the sight of a full orchestra and opera cast performing not inside a gilded theatre but on open ground before a fortress wall or a palace facade.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Every performance is staged outdoors against a different landmark rather than inside a conventional opera house: past programs have used Cathedral Square inside the Peter and Paul Fortress, the grounds of Elagin Island, the parade ground at Gatchina Palace, and the square before Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo as backdrops for full-scale productions

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival pairs traditional orchestral staging with digital multimedia elements, including large-scale projections, giving each production a scale that a conventional indoor house could not match

03

The city starts moving

Admission is free for every performance, an unusual commitment for opera at this production level, and the event has been folded into Saint Petersburg's official cultural programming as part of citywide culture-year initiatives
