The story

White Nights Marathon in Saint Petersburg

The White Nights Marathon is Saint Petersburg's signature long-distance running event, held at night each summer to take advantage of the city's famous white nights, when the sky never fully darkens. Runners choose between a 10-kilometer race and a full 42.2-kilometer marathon, starting near Gazprom Arena and finishing on Palace Square after passing landmarks including Kazan Cathedral and the Peter and Paul Fortress.

Saint Petersburg sits at roughly 60 degrees north, a latitude high enough that for several weeks bracketing the summer solstice, the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for true darkness to fall.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Conceived in 1990, the race takes advantage of a natural phenomenon unique to Saint Petersburg's high latitude: for several weeks around the summer solstice, the sun barely dips below the horizon, leaving the sky lit through what would normally be the night

02

The mystery stays covered

Organizers schedule the marathon to start at ten in the evening, letting runners cover the full 42

03

The city starts moving

2 kilometers under a soft twilight rather than daytime heat, passing directly in front of some of the city's most recognizable landmarks, including Kazan Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress and St Isaac's Cathedral, before finishing on Palace Square in front of the Winter Palace

04

The water draws everyone in

The event has grown into one of Russia's largest running races, drawing tens of thousands of participants in recent editions
