The story

Clean Mountain Elbrus Eco Festival in Terskol

Since 2018, volunteers have gathered on Elbrus's Azau meadow near the village of Terskol each year for Clean Mountain, an ecological festival built around a large-scale trash cleanup of Europe's highest peak. What began with two hundred participants has grown to more than fifteen hundred volunteers from across Russia and abroad, who now combine the cleanup with educational sessions, craft workshops, a fair, and communal pilaf tasting.

Elbrus draws climbers and tourists from across Russia and well beyond, its twin snow-capped summits recognized as the highest point in Europe, and for years that popularity came with a quieter cost, litter accumulating along popular routes and rest areas faster than anyone was cleaning it up.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Clean Mountain distinguishes itself by building an entire festival around volunteer labor rather than passive spectating: the core of the event is a genuine mass cleanup of Elbrus's slopes, tackling litter left behind by the mountain's heavy tourist traffic on Europe's highest peak

02

The mystery stays covered

Its growth from a modest gathering of two hundred activists in 2018 to well over a thousand volunteers within a few years reflects rising environmental awareness among Russian outdoor enthusiasts and a growing sense of ownership over one of the country's most iconic natural landmarks

03

The city starts moving

Pairing hard physical work with educational tracks, craft master classes, and a shared pilaf tasting afterward gives the festival a rare combination of genuine environmental impact and communal celebration
