Surkharban is a traditional Buryat summer sports festival held across towns in the Republic of Buryatia, with its largest gathering in Ulan-Ude. Rooted in centuries-old pastoral clan competitions, it centers on the three traditional games of archery, wrestling and horse racing, and its name derives from the Buryat word for archery target.

Long before Buryat lands came under Russian imperial and later Soviet administration, Buryat clans gathered seasonally to compete in archery, wrestling and horse racing, contests that were simultaneously entertainment, social ritual and practical assessment of skills that mattered for a pastoral, historically semi-nomadic way of life.
