The story

Litsedey Theatre Festival in Ulyanovsk

Litsedey has run annually in Ulyanovsk since 2007, growing out of an actors' competition at the city's Goncharov Drama Theatre that began in 1993. Staged each March around International Theatre Day, it brings together productions and guest artists from across Russia and countries including Poland, France, Denmark and Armenia, closing with an awards ceremony at the historic drama theatre.

The Ulyanovsk Drama Theatre carries the name of Ivan Goncharov, the nineteenth-century novelist born in the city, and it was inside this same theatre, in 1993, that a modest internal competition for actors quietly planted the seed of what would become Litsedey.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Litsedey apart from a general theatre festival is its origin as a competition specifically for actors rather than productions, tracing back to 1993 when the Ulyanovsk Drama Theatre named after Ivan Goncharov ran an internal contest recognizing its own performers

02

The mystery stays covered

That competitive, actor-focused identity persists even as the event has grown into a broader regional and international theatre festival, drawing companies and individual artists from well beyond Ulyanovsk Oblast

03

The city starts moving

Its timing around International Theatre Day each March gives the festival a natural anchor in the wider theatrical calendar, and its recent milestone as a twentieth edition, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Russia's Union of Theatre Figures, underscores how long the event has now run under the patronage of successive regional governors
