The story

HONOR Vladivostok Ice Run in Vladivostok

Each February since 2016, roughly fifteen hundred runners have laced up for one of the world's more unusual half-marathons: a race across the frozen surface of Novikov Bay off Russky Island, with the Sea of Japan itself as the running surface. The HONOR Vladivostok Ice Run offers distances from a one-kilometer fun run up to a full 21.1-kilometer half-marathon on sea ice.

Vladivostok sits at the end of the Trans-Siberian line, closer to Tokyo and Seoul than to Moscow, and every February it turns that geography into a selling point for one of the stranger races on the international running calendar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Running an official half-marathon distance directly on sea ice is rare enough to make this event essentially unique in Russia, and organizers lean into that novelty with a distinct Mix Trail category — a 15-kilometer route combining the frozen bay with stretches of Russky Island's coastal terrain, testing runners on two very different surfaces in one race

02

The mystery stays covered

The field draws well beyond Primorsky Krai, with entrants from thirty-five Russian regions and international runners from China, South Korea, Japan, and India making the trip for a race that exists nowhere else in quite this form

03

The city starts moving

Ice thickness and safety are monitored closely each year before the course is finalized, adding an element of genuine environmental uncertainty absent from conventional road races
