Yakutia Ysyakh Festival in Yakutsk

Ysyakh is the principal traditional summer festival of the Sakha (Yakut) people, held around the summer solstice to honor the Ayyy deities, the renewal of nature and the start of a new life cycle. Marked with libation rituals, kumys drinking, dance, wrestling and horse racing, the largest edition, Ysyakh Tuymaady near Yakutsk, drew more than 230,000 visitors in 2024.

Ysyakh is the central traditional holiday of the Sakha (Yakut) people, a spring-into-summer festival honoring the Ayyy, the benevolent deities of Sakha belief, the renewal of nature after Yakutia's long winter, and the beginning of a new life cycle.

According to legend the first Ysyakh was held by Ellei Bootur, a legendary Sakha forefather, atop Mount Chochur-Muran, and the earliest Western written account comes from Dutch traveler Everard Ysbrand Ides, who crossed Siberia en route to China in the late seventeenth century and described the Sakha marking the festival with great solemnity around continuously tended bonfires
