The story

Mustique Blues Festival in Mustique/Bequia/Saint Vincent

The Mustique Blues Festival is an annual blues music series at Basil's Bar on Mustique, founded in 1995 by British blues singer Dana Gillespie and bar owner Basil Charles, running each January and February and using ticket proceeds to fund scholarships for students on neighbouring St Vincent.

In 1995, blues singer Dana Gillespie and Basil Charles, the owner of Mustique's famed beach bar, started something unlikely: a blues festival on one of the Caribbean's most private and exclusive islands, an enclave better known for the celebrities and royals who own villas there than for live music.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few blues festivals anywhere are held on a private island frequented by celebrities and royalty, and fewer still exist primarily to fund scholarships rather than simply to sell tickets

02

The mystery stays covered

Since its founding, the festival has channelled its proceeds into education for students on St Vincent, the far larger and poorer island near exclusive Mustique, supporting several hundred students through full scholarships and bursaries over the decades, turning Basil's Bar into what regulars call the House of Blues for several weeks each year
