Union Island Maroon Festival in Union Island

The Maroon Festival is a pre-planting-season thanksgiving held on Union Island each May, when islanders drum, dance and feast on the traditional dish wangoo to honour ancestors and coax the rains that end the dry season, centred on Big Drum and Nation Dance performances that run from before dawn into night.

Long before Union Island had an airport or a marina, its survival depended on the rains that came, or failed to come, at the end of the dry season.
