The story

SMIAF San Marino International Arts Festival in Citta di San Marino

SMIAF, the San Marino International Arts Festival, is a free multi-day arts festival held in the historic hilltop center of Citta di San Marino in late summer. Now in its nineteenth edition, it brings performance and visual arts into the medieval streets and squares of the UNESCO-listed old town over a long weekend at the end of July.

San Marino is easy to picture only as a ceremonial curiosity, the world's oldest surviving republic, perched on a limestone peak with three medieval towers and a population smaller than many single neighborhoods elsewhere in Europe.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Nearly two decades of continuous editions make SMIAF one of San Marino's longer-running cultural fixtures, giving it a settled identity in the republic's summer calendar rather than the feel of a one-off event

02

The mystery stays covered

Free admission keeps it accessible to residents and day-trippers alike, in a country whose entire population is smaller than a single mid-sized town, so the festival doubles as a genuine community gathering rather than a purely tourist spectacle

03

The city starts moving

Staging an international arts festival within the walls of a fortified medieval capital, among the same towers and ramparts used for state ceremonies the rest of the year, gives visiting artists and performers a setting that is compact, walkable and dramatically lit after dark, letting a single evening's stroll take in several different performance spaces

What moves first

Living ritual

SMIAF continues San Marino's practice of using its historic center itself as a stage

Water and renewal

a pattern shared with the republic's Christmas market and its civic ceremonies

The sacred route

Living ritual

in which state occasions and cultural events alike take place among the same medieval walls rather than in purpose-built venues
