The story

Tchiloli Performances in Sao Tome

Tchiloli is Sao Tome's centuries-old open-air folk theater, a sung and danced retelling of a sixteenth-century Portuguese tragedy about the Marquis of Mantua and Charlemagne's court, staged since colonial times on saints' feast days across the island's roca settlements and neighborhoods. Performed by all-male troupes in ribboned costume, it survives as one of Central Africa's most distinctive Portuguese-heritage dramatic traditions.

Tchiloli takes its name from a Portuguese chivalric tragedy that reached Sao Tome island with colonial settlers in the sixteenth century: the Tragedia do Marques de Mantua e do Principe D.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Tchiloli's script, the Tragedia do Marques de Mantua e do Principe D

02

The mystery stays covered

Carlos Magno, arrived with Portuguese settlers in the 1500s and was preserved almost entirely through oral transmission by forros, the descendants of Sao Tome's early free Black population, who reshaped it into a distinctly Santomean form

03

The city starts moving

Every role, including the queens and princesses, is played by men, some wearing veils and skirts over trousers, plumed hats, sashes and painted wooden masks

04

The water draws everyone in

A tambor drum and an apito whistle drive the stylized, chanted verse, while a single performance can run for hours across one feast day, blending medieval European court drama with Central African rhythm, satire and direct audience interaction found nowhere else in the Lusophone world
