The story

Janadriyah National Festival in Riyadh

Janadriyah was Saudi Arabia's flagship national heritage festival, held annually near Riyadh from 1985 through its 33rd edition in 2018 into 2019. It featured camel racing, Ardah sword dancing, poetry evenings, and pavilions from every Saudi province plus an annual guest-of-honor country, but has not run in its original standalone form since 2019.

For more than three decades, Janadriyah was the closest thing Saudi Arabia had to a single, unifying cultural festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

For over three decades Janadriyah was the closest thing Saudi Arabia had to a national cultural showcase, drawing more than a million visitors a year to a purpose-built heritage village outside Riyadh

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized first by the Ministry of National Guard and later transferred to the Ministry of Culture in 2019, it hosted a rotating cast of honored guest nations, from France in 2010 to Indonesia in 2019, alongside crafts demonstrations, operettas, and horse and camel racing that gave regional and international visitors a single-site introduction to Saudi and wider Gulf heritage
