The story

Dakar Hip Hop Festival Festa2H in Dakar

Festa2H, the Festival International de Hip Hop et de Cultures Urbaines, is an annual hip-hop and urban culture festival in Dakar organized by Africulturban, the cultural association founded in Pikine in 2006 by rapper Matador. Editions documented from 2010 through at least 2017 have run in the May-to-June window with international guest acts.

In 2005, a Senegalese rapper known as Matador organized a benefit concert to help flood victims in Thiaroye, a neighborhood in Pikine, one of greater Dakar's densely populated suburbs.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Festa2H is the flagship event of Africulturban, described in multiple sources as the first urban-culture structure of its kind in Africa, and it has hosted international hip-hop names such as M

02

The mystery stays covered

P, Medine, Onyx, and Soul Bang's at its 12th edition in 2017

03

The city starts moving

It grew out of a very specific local moment: Matador organized a benefit concert for flood victims in Pikine's Thiaroye neighborhood in 2005, and built Africulturban the following year with backing from the local mayor's office

04

The water draws everyone in

The festival is tied directly to Africulturban's other infrastructure, including a recording studio, community radio station, and the African Turntablism DJ school run by DJ Gee Bayss, so performers and attendees are connected to a working hip-hop education ecosystem rather than a one-off concert series
