Dakar Music Expo in Dakar
Dakar Music Expo, branded DMX, is an annual professional music trade fair and concert series held in late March in Dakar, Senegal, combining a Salon Pro industry showcase with public concerts at the Theatre de Verdure of the Institut Francais du Senegal, drawing artists, professionals and audiences from across the region.
Dakar has a claim to being one of Africa's most musically significant cities, a reputation built over decades through griot storytelling traditions, the golden-era Star Band and Orchestre Baobab, and Youssou N'Dour's Super Etoile de Dakar, whose fusion of traditional Wolof rhythms with modern instrumentation helped define mbalax as one of West Africa's defining popular genres.
