The story

Belgrade Marathon in Belgrade

Belgrade Marathon traces its roots to a 1910 walking race and became a standard 42.195-kilometer marathon in 1990, notably still held in 1999 during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Run each April along the Danube through Zemun's Gardos Tower and New Belgrade, the 2025 edition drew over 1,500 marathon finishers among thousands of total participants.

Long before Belgrade had a modern marathon, it had a walking race.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Belgrade Marathon carries a history unlike most European city marathons: its roots trace to a 1910 race called the Great Walking Race from Obrenovac to Belgrade, and the modern marathon, established in 1988, notably continued in 1999 even as NATO bombs fell on Yugoslavia, when around forty runners from nine countries still finished a metered group run through the city

02

The mystery stays covered

The route now loops through Zemun's cobblestone streets past Gardos Tower at the meeting of the Danube and Sava rivers, into New Belgrade's riverside parkland

03

The city starts moving

Organized by sports club JSD Partizan with the City of Belgrade, the event has grown from a few hundred marathon finishers in the early 2020s to well over a thousand by 2024, alongside thousands more in its half marathon and shorter races
