The story

LILALO Loznica in Loznica

LILALO Festival takes its name from lile, hand-bent cherry or birch bark torches lit before Petrovdan in a Loznica-region custom recognized as intangible cultural heritage in 2017. Held each July across Loznica, Banja Koviljaca, and Tesla's birthplace village Trsic, the 2026 edition marked its ninth year with concerts, theatre, and craft workshops.

In the villages around Loznica, in western Serbia's Podrinje region, families have long marked the evening before Petrovdan, Saint Peter's Day on July 12, by lighting bonfires topped with lile, torches made by peeling and carefully bending strips of cherry or birch bark and mounting them on a hazel rod.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

LILALO Festival is built around a genuinely local, centuries-old ritual rather than a generic summer program: lile are torches made from peeled and bent cherry or birch bark mounted on a hazel rod, traditionally lit on bonfires the evening before Petrovdan, Saint Peter's Day, as a symbol of community and protection specific to the Loznica and Podrinje region, a custom formally entered into Serbia's National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's name combines that tradition with the city's own, spreading its program across three sites at once, Loznica, the spa town Banja Koviljaca, and Trsic, the birth village of language reformer Vuk Karadzic, while also weaving in contemporary programming such as a monodrama on Nikola Tesla's mother staged for Tesla's own hundred-seventieth birth anniversary
