The story

EXIT Festival in Novi Sad

EXIT Festival has run every July since 2000 inside the Petrovaradin Fortress overlooking Novi Sad, growing from a student-led protest movement against the Milosevic regime into one of Europe's largest multi-genre music festivals, staging dozens of stages across the fortress's historic tunnels, ramparts and courtyards.

EXIT Festival began not as a music event but as a protest.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

EXIT's founding story sets it apart from almost any other major European festival: it began in 2000 as a student protest movement pushing for democratic change and free media in Serbia, running for one hundred consecutive days before becoming an annual music festival the following year

02

The mystery stays covered

Its venue is equally distinctive, the Petrovaradin Fortress, an eighteenth-century Austrian stronghold overlooking the Danube, whose network of underground tunnels, casemates and ramparts has been converted into dozens of themed stages, giving the festival a labyrinthine physical layout unlike a conventional festival field

03

The city starts moving

That combination of political origin story and a genuinely singular historic venue has helped EXIT win international festival awards and draw a large international audience to Novi Sad specifically for the fortress experience
