Starcevo Tamburica Festival in Starcevo
Starcevo Tamburitza Festival is a competitive international gathering of small tamburitza ensembles held at Starcevo's House of Culture, drawing orchestras from Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Reaching a jubilee twentieth edition in 2022 despite a pandemic pause, it awards prizes to the top three orchestras and the best individual instrumentalist each October.
The tambura, a long-necked stringed instrument central to folk music traditions across the former Yugoslavia, gets a dedicated competitive stage every October in Starcevo, a small town near Pancevo whose own name carries an unrelated but notable historical weight: it lent its name to the Starcevo culture, one of the significant Neolithic archaeological cultures of southeastern Europe, first identified at a site near the town.
